Local Government Q&A
Must the resignation of a police officer be accepted by the corporate authorities?

An unconditional resignation of a municipal agent, employee or officer, including a police officer, takes effect when delivered to the proper authority and cannot be withdrawn thereafter. In the case of a police officer, the notice can be sent to a superior officer in the police department or to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. Neither the corporate authorities nor the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners needs to accept the resignation.
